Renovated Elementary School
The expansion/renovation of this aging 1969 elementary school marks the end of the second phase of a long-term collaboration between Flansburgh Architects and the Salem, MA School District to replace or renovate the City's ten existing public schools.
The scope of the project included a complete renovation of existing spaces and the incorporation of two-story additions at opposite ends of the original building. Newly expanded program elements, including adjoining music, choral, and rehearsal rooms, support a performing arts magnet theme.
The award-winning design pays homage to Salem’s legacy as a major 19th century shipbuilding district with various nautical motifs such as vaulted roofs, porthole windows and vents, and fish-patterned floor tiles.
