Open Design Competition
Buildings are clustered around an outdoor amphitheater like a village around a campfire. The curving roof forms of the classrooms recall the mountains, wind, and water of Hawaii while the steep pyramidal roofs of the storytelling rooms reinterpret traditional village structures. This 2003 Design Competition allowed Flansburgh Architects to explore a large range of sustainable-design approaches including green roofs, day lighting, water recycling, photovoltaics, natural ventilation, sun shading, recycled local materials, and wind power.
