Sutton Middle/High School | Sutton, MA
Feasibility Study and Schematic Design
Flansburgh initially updated and expanded the Sutton Middle/High School feasibility study to determine enrollment projections, condition of existing facilities, space deficiencies, and site constraints, and presented alternative design options to the community, school building committee, and Massachusetts School Building Association.
In the schematic phase, the approved design approach was developed, which retains the athletics and science facilities from the most recently constructed portion of the high school (1980s). It calls for building another level on top of an existing one-story section and replacing the oldest portions of the existing complex. With its new addition, the combined middle/high school will be significantly larger than the existing facility. This approach was the least expensive of the options studied and meets the requirements for:
• site sustainability
• water conservation
• reduced energy use
• wise use of materials
• high level of indoor environmental quality.
Construction was recently approved by the voters of Sutton; Flansburgh will now develop the design, prepare contract documents, and perform construction administration. Construction is slated to begin in the Spring of 2011.
